St. Jude Trail Preserve • A ramble to the mangrove-lined shores of St. Jude Harbor, the St. Jude Trail is a birder’s delight, tucked away in a residential neighborhood on the edge of St. James City on Pine Island and protected by the Calusa Land Trust.

Pine Island Flatwoods Preserve • Totaling nearly 920 acres, this large preserve consists of eight land parcels acquired between 2000 and 2011. The preserve consists of nine native plant communities, including mesic pine flatwoods, freshwater marshes, tidal swamp, hydric hammock and coastal grassland.

St. James Creek Preserve • This 118-acre preserve on Pine Island includes pine flatwoods and mangrove forest plant communities. It has also had an active bald eagle nest for more than 20 years. This preserve is open to the public for hiking. However, visitors during eagle nesting season (October-May) are asked to please avoid the Eagle Nest Observation Platform and not disturb the nesting eagles. Eagles are protected under state and federal law. The trailhead is located along Castile Road, just off Stringfellow Road.
Galt Preserve • This preserve features 2.5 miles of hiking trails and boardwalks, a fishing pier, picnic pavilions, restroom and a paved parking area. Galt Preserve consists of twelve plant communities, including mangrove swamp and mesic flatwoods. The preserve is also home to a variety of bird and animal species, including bald eagle, bobcat and American alligator. The preserve is open daily during daylight hours.
